self-management / intellectual property / sound creation
“Besides her artistic work, there are many reasons why we’re lucky Ainara LeGardon exists: her explanations are clear, she puts on a brave fight, her message is true and believable. We are very lucky and, moreover, she’s indispensable in making things easier for those of us who innocently wander the jungle that is the musical industry more eager than aware!” (Mikel Serrano)
I specialised in intellectual property out of a shear need as creator. The more I enjoy music, the further I feel from the musical industry. That’s why I started my own label, through which I’ve been self-publishing my work since 2003.
Since 2004, I impart workshops related to cultural self-management and offer consultancy services for creative people in need of answers regarding intellectual property rights, the legal processes involved in self-publishing and, more generally, any issues for which my experience may be helpful. I also offer training for cultural management professionals, putting at their disposal the tools required to further develop their skills efficiently.
My work “Otro modelo es posible” (“Another model is possible”) analyses the rights’ management model in the field of music, assessing the need and feasibility of a paradigm shift. In 2015, my article “Revisión del marco legislativo de la Unión Europea en materia de propiedad intelectual” (“Reviewing the European Union legal framework on intellectual property”) was chosen by the Jury of the prestigious Rodrigo Uria Meruéndano Awards in Arts Rights and published by Civitas-Thomson Reuters Aranzadi as part of the book Derecho del Arte. Anuario Iberoamericano 2016. (“Arts Rights. Latin American Year Book 2016”).
I am also co-author, with David García Aristegui, of the critical essay SGAE: el monopolio en decadencia (SGAE: a monopoly in decline) (consonni, 2017).
I permanently collaborate as a consultant for Euskal Herriko Musika Bulego Ekartea (Basque Office for Music), Euskal Irudigileak (Basque Professional Association of Illustrators), Arragua (a space for developing contemporary creation in practice) and the 2DEO audiovisual lab at Tabakalera (International Centre for Contemporary Culture). I also coordinate the consulting service «Artsesoría» at the CBA Cultural Centre in Irun.
Since December 2018, I am part of the Basque Council for Culture working within the group for Gender Strategies and Policies.
I also carry out workshops in the field of creation and accept specific training proposals related to listening and sound creation. Among these stimulating projects are the programme “Soinulabor” (a collaboration with the Irun Drawing and Painting Academy sponsored by the Town Council), a workshop for the Amateur Choir at CA2M (2 de Mayo Art Centre in Móstoles), an experience on listening and sound creation at Boultek (Casablanca, Morocco) through a collaboration betweein Tabakalera and Gipuzkoa Koopera, and others.
I enjoy bringing together my artistic side and my work in the sphere of intellectual property, aiming for both worlds to inform and feed off each other.
